Oculoplastic Surgery

What is Oculoplasty?

Oculoplasty, also known as ophthalmic plastic surgery, is surgery with relation to the eye and its surrounding structures. Oculoplasty surgery may be performed to improve function, comfort and appearance for the following conditions:

How long does it take to recover from an oculoplastic surgery?

Knowing what to expect before and after oculoplasty is also important before making the decision of going ahead with the procedure. Before the procedure is performed you should take advice about diet and other preoperative care from your ophthalmologist. As far as what happens after the surgery is concerned, the main focus is always on the recovery time.

Usually the recovery after oculoplasty can be divided in three stages—bruising, swelling and maturation. The first stage takes about 2 to 3 weeks, the stage of swelling is variable and may last up to 8 weeks, and the healing will continue gradually. However, going back to work and your normal day to day activities can be done in 5 to 10 days after your surgery. How fast you return to your work will mostly depend on your comfort level and with proper post-operative care you can start as soon as you like.

Frequently Asked Questions

What conditions does oculoplasty treat?
Oculoplasty addresses a wide range of conditions, including eyelid malpositions (like droopy eyelids or eyelid tumors), tearing problems (due to blocked tear ducts), orbital fractures, thyroid eye disease, and cosmetic eyelid concerns (like wrinkles or excess skin).
When should I see an oculoplastic surgeon?
You should consider seeing an oculoplastic surgeon if you have any issues affecting the eyelids, tear ducts, or orbit, such as persistent eyelid swelling, excessive tearing, changes in eyelid position affecting vision, or concerns about cosmetic appearance around the eyes.
What happens during an oculoplastic consultation?
During your consultation, the oculoplastic surgeon will perform a detailed examination of your eyes and surrounding structures. They may use specialized tests like imaging studies to diagnose the problem accurately. Based on their findings, they will discuss treatment options and potential outcomes.
What are the treatment options for eyelid malpositions?
Treatment depends on the specific condition but may include surgical correction to reposition the eyelids, repair of eyelid drooping (ptosis), removal of eyelid lesions or tumors, or procedures to improve eyelid function and appearance.
How is blocked tear duct (dacryostenosis) treated through oculoplasty?
Treatment may involve probing and irrigation of the tear ducts to open them up, or in some cases, surgical placement of stents or tubes to keep the tear ducts open and allow tears to drain properly.
Is oculoplastic surgery safe?
Oculoplastic surgery is generally safe when performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon. As with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications, which your surgeon will discuss with you during the consultation.
Will oculoplastic surgery affect my vision?
In most cases, oculoplastic surgery aims to improve the function and appearance of the eye and surrounding structures without negatively impacting vision. Your surgeon will take all necessary precautions to preserve and protect your vision.
Is oculoplastic surgery covered by insurance?
Coverage varies depending on your insurance plan and the specific procedure being performed. Some procedures may be considered medically necessary and covered by insurance, while others, such as cosmetic procedures, may not be covered. It’s important to check with your insurance provider and oculoplastic surgeon’s office for details.
